Why Do Mushrooms Feel Like DMT Now?
I'm curious whether anyone else has noticed a change in their mushroom experiences after trying DMT for the first time.
Before DMT, my mushroom trips always felt very earthy, organic, and connected to nature. Since having a few DMT experiences about a year ago, mushrooms seem to have taken on a much more DMT-like quality—neon architecture, intricate geometry, entity-like presences, and that unmistakable "DMT" feel.
The only other explanation I can think of is that the change isn't necessarily due to DMT itself, but to changes in me or even in society. I used mushrooms and LSD quite a bit years ago, then didn't touch psychedelics for 15–20 years. I tried DMT a year or so ago, and only recently returned to mushrooms, which now feel remarkably similar to DMT.
That got me wondering whether this is really a "before and after DMT" phenomenon, or whether our expectations and cultural influences have changed over the last couple of decades. These days we're surrounded by DMT artwork, podcasts, AI-generated psychedelic imagery, discussions about entities, hyperspace, simulation theory, etc. I wonder if all of that changes the way we experience or interpret psychedelic states.
I guess the other side of the question is for people who were using DMT 20+ years ago, before it became widely discussed online. Did DMT trips back then have the same neon, geometric, entity-filled character that people describe today, or did they feel more organic and nature-oriented? That would help answer whether this is genuinely something that changes after experiencing DMT, or whether the "digital age" has subtly influenced how psychedelic experiences are perceived and remembered.
I'd be really interested to hear from anyone who has experience with psychedelics spanning both eras.
